Harry Gordon States transferred to the Madras Commissariat Department on 1 May 1868, as a Staff Sergeant. He had previously served with the Royal Artillery. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal with £5 gratuity on 7 August 1878. Promoted to Sub Conductor in March 1879, he served in the 2nd Afghan War being present at the defence of Shirpore, Nov 1879-Feb 1880, and Lettabun, 6 Feb-11 Aug 1880 (Medal with clasp). He was promoted to Conductor in May 1882 and was pensioned on 16 March 1885.
