R. W. Jarred enlisted in the Royal Air Force as A.C.1 on 10 February 1922, attaining the rank of Temporary Warrant Officer before receiving a Commission in September 1942. Granted an Emergency Commission as a Flying Officer in the General Duties Branch R.A.F., he was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in September 1943, and to Acting Squadron Leader in February 1946. He was placed on the retired List at his own request, retaining the rank of Squadron Leader, on 27 April 1948.
