Arthur Shaw enlisted in the 2nd Battalion at Manchester on 30 October 1890, aged 18 years. He served in theSudan and in the Boer War and was mentioned in Lord Roberts’ despatch dated 4 September 1901. He was discharged to pension in October 1911, with a life pension of 2 shillings per day, and re-enlisted at the outbreak of the Great War. He went to France as Regimental sergeant Major of the 15th Battalion on 23 November 1915, was wounded (S.W.B. No. H/209), and discharged on 24 july 1916. He was in his 80th year when he received his Meritorious Service Medal in 1951.
