Regimental Sergeant Major Herbert Goulding was killed in action with the 10th Battalion on 4 November 1916. He was the eldest son of the late Colour Sergeant Goulding of the Lancashire Fusiliers, and was born at the Old Militia Barracks. Joining the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1892, when 14 years of age, he went to India the same year. He served in the Sudan and South African campaigns with the 2nd Battalion. He left the army after serving 21 years, having been awarded his Good Conduct medal in 1911.
