William Oldfield was born and enlisted in Wigan for the 10th Battalion. He was killed in action on 7 July 1916, during the attack on Quadrangle Suport Trench, near Mametz. Together with the 9th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, they suffered heavy casualties when they found the German trenches filled with troops about to launch an attack of their own.
