D.S.O. London Gazette 3 June 1919. The University of St Andrews Roll of Honour gives the following citation: ‘For fine leadership of his battery and courage and determination of a high order during the recent offensive at Roussoy, on the 28th September, when he kept his battery in action in an exposed position under heavy fire, and again near Le Cateau on the 23rd October, when he made a personal reconnaissance in front of our own advanced infantry, and finding a battery abandoned by the enemy, brought up a party of his own men and turned a gun on the retreating enemy.’
M.C. London Gazette 3 June 1918. The same source states: ‘For conspicuous good work and devotion to duty as second-in-command of his battery.’

Charles Edward Berkeley Lowe was born in 1883, eldest son of Charles Lowe, formerly Times correspondent in Berlin. He was educated at St Andrews where he was a member of the UniversityBattery. He joined the London Scottish in 1914 as a Private, and served in France with the unit from November 1914 until December 1915, when he was commissioned into No. 3 Company, North Scottish, Royal Garrison Artillery.
