M.C. London Gazette 16 September 1918. ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a withdrawal. After his Major had been killed, he commanded his battery with skill and ability. He fought a rearguard action with great determination and courage, engaging the enemy over open sights and inflicting severe losses on him.’

Harold Treneer Sampson was born in Wales in 1887, and educated at Tonbridge School. He enlisted as a Trooper in the Glamorgan Yeomanry on 5 August 1914, and was commissioned into the West Riding Divisional Artillery Column, R.F.A. in March 1915. He transferred to ‘B’ Battery 311th brigade, R.F.A., in May 1915, and served in france from January 1917 until March 1919. He was present in actions on the Somme in March 1917, the battles of Arras and Vimy Ridge in April 1917, at Messines in May 1917, Ypres in October 1917, the March retreat in 1918, and in the final offensive in October and November 1918. During ww2 he served in the L.D.V. and was a Major in the Home Guard, living near Llanelly, Wales.
