Issued by the Paris Mint in 1923. By the Treaty of London, signed in 1839, the European powers guaranteed the neutrality of Belgium in any future European conflict. Germany derided the Treaty as a ‘scrap of paper’ when they violated Belgian neutrality by invading the country with a task force of 30,000 men on 4 August 1914
