Christopher George Major was born at Brockenton, Bucklam Newton, Devon, on 9 December 1876. He joined the Royal Navy in 1897 and served as a Stoker in the South African and China campaigns. Discharged from the Navy in May 1903, he joined the Metropolitan Police on 8 June 1903 and also enrolled for the Royal Fleet Reserve. Recalled to the Navy in August 1914, he went back to the Police in February 1919 and finally retired on pension on 14 April 1928.
