Henry Briar was born in Alverstoke, Fareham, Hampshire on 4 March 1875. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Marines on 4 July 1893. His papers list him with the Portsmouth Battalion R.M.L.I. as having landed at Ostend, served at Dunkirk and at the defence of Antwerp. Awarded the 1914 Star with clasp. Served with the Victory R.M. Brigade, September 1914-July 1916, then with the Portsmouth Division, July 1916-May 1919. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. in January 1922. With copied service papers.
