James Ffanck Rolleston was born in Ireland, 1836. He was commissioned Ensign in the 50th Regiment, June 1859, advanced to Lieutenant, April 1864, and served with the Regiment in New Zealand. He served during the Waikato Campaign of 1863-1865, under Lieutenant-General Cameron, K.C.B., and also with the field force under Colonel Warre, C.B. He served in the province of Taranaka, and was present at the capture of Te Ari, Manutaho and Matatawah. He also served during the Waganui Campaign, and was present at the action of Kakaramea, and accompanied Major-General Chute’s field force on its march through the bush from Waganui and Taranaka.
