Medals Related to Sports, The group of sporting medals awarded to William Grenfell, 1st Baron Desborough:
Oxford University Athletic Club, a silver award medal, unsigned, arms, rev. wreath (1876, 3 Miles, 2nd Prize, W.H. Grenfell), 60mm; Oxford University Boat Club, silver medal, unsigned, arms, rev. oxford university eight oar trial race within wreath, 51mm; Oxford v. Cambridge, Putney Medal, silver medals (2), unsigned, arms, rev. possunt quia posse videntur within wreath, both 51mm; Sunbury on Thames Regatta, 1888, an engraved silver medal, legend both sides (Amateur Punting Championship, won by W.H. Grenfell), 45mm; Amateur Punting Championship of the Thames, a uniface silver engraved medal (W.H. Grenfell, Sunbury-on-Thames Regatta, 1889), 51mm; Thames Punting Club [Est 1885], an oval silver-gilt medal, unsigned, flag, rev. male rower in punt (Amateur Champion 1888-1889-1890, W.H. Grenfell), 51 x 34mm [7]. Generally about very fine, the Putney medals better, a most interesting group (£300-400)

William Henry Grenfell, KG, GCVO, JP, 1st Baron Desborough (1855-1945), of Panshanger Park, Hertford; educ. Harrow and Balliol College, Oxford; placed second in 3 Mile race v. Cambridge, 1876; rowed against Cambridge, 1877-8; president of the O.U.A.C. and the O.U.B.C.; climbed in the Alps and shot in the Rocky Mountains and India, swam twice across the Niagara and stroked an eight across the Channel; special correspondent in the Suakim campaign, 1884; served as MP for Salisbury, 1880-5, then Hereford; returned for the Conservatives at High Wycombe, 1900-5; High Sherriff of Bucks, 1890; private secretary to Sir W. Harcourt at the Exchequer, 1892; mayor of Maidenhead, 1895-7; president and chairman of the Bath Club, London, from its inception in 1894 until 1942; president of the London Chamber of Commerce and the first president of the Olympic Association.
