Epsom was hosting race meetings in the 17th century and early events are mentioned in Samuel Pepys’ Diary. The modern-day history of the course dates to 1779 and the organisation by the Earl of Derby of the first Oaks meeting, named after his estate. The first Epsom Derby was run in 1780
