Alfred John Norris was born on 18 August 1865 at London Colney, Hertfordshire, and attested for the 1st Life Guards at London on 18 August 1879. He transferred to the 7th Hussars on 1 August 1881, and was appointed a Trumpeter on 1 March 1882. Promoted Corporal on 1 November 1886, he was advanced to Band Sergeant on 12 November 1887, and subsequently proceeded to Kneller Hall to qualify as a Bandmaster in February 1895. He transferred to the 5th Lancers, with the rank of Bandmaster, on 17 December 1897, and served with the Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War from 13 February 1898 until 28 April 1902 (entitled to both Queen’s and King’s South Africa Medals). Awarded the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, and the 1911 Coronation Medal, he was finally discharged on 30 September 1912 after 33 years and 44 days’ service, and subsequently served as Bandmaster to the Dublin Police from 1912 until 1930. Recommended for the Meritorious Service Medal in January 1905, he received it on 17 September 1932, and died in 1937.
