John Richard Devereux was born in Huntingdon in 1872, and attested for the 11th Hussars in London on 7 March 1892. He served with the Regiment in India from September 1892 until October 1899, and then in Egypt until February 1902. He was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1910 per Army Order 254, being presented with it by Brigadier-General the Hon. E. J. Montague-Stuart-Wortley on 27 November 1910. He was a Master Cook towards the end of his service and, having been advanced Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant on 23 August 1914, he was discharged on 9 October 1914, after 22 years and 217 days’ service. Subsequently commissioned Lieutenant and Quartermaster, Royal Army Veterinary Corps, 21 April 1916, he served with them during the Great War and was Mentioned in Despatches ‘for distinguished services with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force’ (London Gazette 16 January 1918). He relinquished his commission on 29 September 1921, and was granted the honorary rank of captain. He received his Meritorious Service Medal in 1953 per Army Order 98.
