James Craven was born in King’s County, Ireland, and attested for the 18th Foot in December 1837. He served with the Regiment during the First China War (entitled China 1842 medal), and advanced to Sergeant in July 1843. Craven was tried by court martial in January 1855, and found guilty of misappropriating money entrusted to him for recruiting. He was stripped of rank, and imprisoned for 6 months, before being discharged 5 July 1856.
