William Spencer was the Chief Engineer of the S.S. Camden and was awarded the Lloyd’s Medal for Saving Life at Sea for the rescue of fellow members of his crew: ‘On 19 February 1901, 12 miles south of Cape Spartel, the Camden was wrecked whilst on a voyage from Cardiff to Malta with a cargo of Coal.’ (Lloyd’s Weekly Shipping Index 1 March 1901 refers).
