Michael Charles Clapham was appointed Probationary Midshipman (E), R.N.V.R., 7 August 1944; Probationary Acting Sub-Lieutenant (E), R.N.V.R., 11 June 1945; Sub-Lieutenant (E), R.N.V.R., 4 February 1946; Lieutenant (E), R.N., 2 November 1946; Lieutenant-Commander (E), R.N., 2 November 1954; Commander (E), R.N., 31 December 1962; retired 1978.
With a specialisation in the Marine Engineering branch of the Navy most of his time was spent in various Dockyards. He qualified for the General Service medal in H.M.S. Terror, the R.N. Base at Singapore, as Staff Officer I at Naval Technical Planning Department, Ministry of Defence, Malaysia, for which he was also awarded the Pingat Peringatan Malaysia.
