William Lucas was born in Pusey, Devizes, Wiltshire, in 1873 and attested for the Royal Artillery at Christchurch on 1 January 1892. He served in South Africa with the 61st Battery R.F.A. (Howitzers), November 1899-April 1900, being accidentally wounded in the left arm at Spion Kop on 26 January 1900. He subsequently served in India with the 44th Battery, February 1908 to November 1909 and obtained his ultimate rank of Battery Sergeant-Major with the 5th London Brigade R.F.A. in November 1909, before being discharged on 31 May 1913.
