John McCulloch served with the 93rd Highlanders in the Crimea and was present at Alma, Balaklava, and the siege of Sebastopol, where he was slightly wounded during the final bombardment of that place on 22 August 1855 (Medal with three clasps - a confirmed ‘Thin Red Line’ man). He was afterwards present in the operations at the relief of Lucknow (Medal with clasp), as well as those on the north-west frontier at Umbeyla (Medal with clasp).
