William Butler served with the 92nd Foot in Afghanistan, and was also entitled to the Kabul to Kandahar Star. He was awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity of £5, and was discharged on 16 August 1881, after 22 years and 260 days’ service.
