Ernest Maitland Cooke was born in Wimbledon in 1883 and educated at Christchurch, Oxford, and Leeds Clerical School. Ordained Deacon in 1907 and Priest in 1908, he served as Curate at the Church of St. Bartholomew’s at Armley 1908-10, before being appointed Superintendent of the Shrewsbury School Mission in North Liverpool in 1910. He served during the Great War with the British Red Cross and Order of St. John of Jerusalem on the Western Front from 19 December 1914. The Medal roll for the 1914-15 Star lists him as a chauffeur, so it is possible that in addition to his clerical duties he assisted in driving the wounded back from the front line.
