Lawrence Ringrose Payling was born in Hull, Yorkshire on 11 March 1897, the son of publican James Henry Payling. During the Great War he served with the 2nd/6th Battalion, West Riding Regiment, before transferring to the 9th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. On 4 October 1918, he was posted to ‘B’ Company, No. 21 Officer Cadet Battalion in Hampshire. He received his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1934, whilst serving with the Army Dental Corps.
