Hammer Price:
£4,000

Charles I (1625-1649), Pattern, Unite, in gold, by A. Vanderdoort, mm. lis, bare headed bust in collar over armour with the ribbon of the Lesser George apparent, without mark of value, rev. crown above oval scroll garnished shield between crowned cr, 8.92g/12h (Allen vi; SCBI Brooker 1239, this coin; N 2655; WR 22). Slightly creased, but very fine and very rare (£4,500-5,000)

Provenance:
J.G. Brooker Collection.

See ‘Abraham Vanderdort and the coinage of Charles I’ by Derek Allen from Helen Farquhar’s notes,
NC 6, vol.1 (1941), pp.54-75. This pattern (fig.6) is in the style of the pattern unite with mark of value, mm. plumes (fig.4) and the unique pattern five unites without mark of value, mm. rose (fig.5), better known as the Juxon Medal. The use of the lis mark is puzzling, since it would seem unlikely that this piece would have been made prior to 1631
