Dorothy Stickland resided at Cattistock Rectory, Dorchester. She volunteered at the Voluntary Aid Detachment Hospital, Weymouth, 1915-1917, before engaging as a Storekeeper with V.A.D. in January 1918. Her service included in the J. C. Hospital, Salonika, 16 January 1918 - 8 May 1919. In later life she wrote a monograph on the author Thomas Hardy’s visits to Cattistock.
