James Gilbert was born in Banff, Scotland in 1814, and joined the Royal Artillery at Aberdeen on 26 March 1838. Promoted Bombardier on 1 April 1846, Corporal on 10 August 1848, and Sergeant on 11 March 1851, he served with No. 1 Company, 11th Battalion in the Crimea, was present at the Battle of Alma and the siege of Sebastopol, and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal together with a gratuity of £15. Subsequently promoted Master Gunner on 1 August 1858, he was awarded a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal by Royal Artillery General Regimental Order on 24 April 1857, with a further gratuity of £10, before being discharged on 27 April 1869, after 31 years and 33 days’ service, most recently with the 4th Division Coast Brigade.
