D.C.M. recommendation dated January 1855.

William Cherry was born in Lisburn, Co. Down, in 1816, and attested for the 4th Regiment of Foot at Lurgan, Co. Down, on 23 February 1838. He was promoted Corporal on 6 January 1840, and Sergeant on 7 September of that year. He served with the regiment in the Crimea, was present at the battles of Alma and Inkermann, and the siege of Sebastopol, and was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal together with a gratuity of £15. He was finally discharged on 7 August 1860, after 22 years and 164 days’ service.
