John Bailey was born in Middlesex and enlisted into the 20th Foot on 6 May 1844, aged 17 years 6 months, a labourer by trade. Prior to his service in the Crimea, he served overseas in Bermuda, Nova Scotia and Canada. He landed in the Crimea at Calamita Bay in September 1854 and was present at Alma, Balaklava, Inkermann and the siege of Sebastopol. He died of cholera on 3 December 1854.
