Walter Garrard was born at Crowland, Lincolnshire, in 1880 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Doncaster on 22 January 1901. He served with the 10th (Sherwood Rangers) Company, 3rd Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 11 February 1901 to 23 August 1902, and was discharged at Aldershot on 30 August 1902, after 1 year and 221 days’ service.
