Ernest James Prout was born in Caversham, Oxfordshire, in 1880 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Reading, Berkshire, on 25 January 1901. He served with the 48th (North Somerset) Company, 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 11 February 1901 to 4 August 1902, and was discharged at Aldershot on 11 August 1902, after 1 year and 199 days’ service.
