Henry Colwell was born in Crediton, Devon, in 1880 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at the Pall Mall Depot, London, on 4 March 1901, having previously served with the 1st Devonshire Rifle Volunteers. He served with the 49th (Montgomeryshire) Company, 9th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 23 March 1901 to 27 August 1902, and was discharged at Aldershot on 3 September 1902, after 1 year and 185 days’ service.
