Thomas James Crothers was born in Belfast, Antrim in 1875 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Belfast on 17 January 1902. He served with the 133rd (Irish Horse) Company, 29th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 11 May 1902 to 6 January 1903, and was discharged at Aldershot on 16 January 1903, after 1 year’s service.
