Lord Frederick FitzGerald was born at Carton, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, on 18 January 1857, son of the 4th Duke of Leinster. He was commissioned Lieutenant in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 17 February 1876, becoming Captain on 16 March 1885, and Brevet Major on 15 June 1885. He served as Adjutant with the 2nd Battalion 60th Rifles in the Afghan War from October 1878 to November 1880, took part in the advance on and occupation of Kandahar and Kelat-I-Ghilzie, and was present in the engagements at Ahmed Khel and Urzoo near Ghuznee; accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Kandahar, and was present at the battle of Kandahar (Medal with two clasps and Bronze Decoration). Served in the Marri Expedition under Brigadier-General MacGregor. Served in the Boer War of 1881. Served in the Egyptian War of 1882, and was present in the action at Kassassin (9th September), and at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Also served with the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 as Aide de Camp to Sir Redvers Buller, Chief of Staff (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, Clasp). He retired with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and died at Carton on 8 March 1924, aged 77.
