Tiverton Todd was born in Bermondsey, London. A clerk by occupation, he attested for service in the 19th Hussars on 9 May 1888, aged 18 years, 3 months. In 1896 he was transferred to the 5th Lancers. He served overseas in India, September 1891-March 1898 and South Africa, March 1898-April 1901. Seeing action on both continents, he was awarded the India General Service Medal 1895-1902 with clasps for Tirah 1897-98 and Punjab Frontier 1897-98 and the Queen’s South Africa Medal (’Cape Colony’ clasp unconfirmed). Todd attained the rank of Serjeant in December 1907 and in October 1908 he was awarded the Army L.S.& G.C. Medal with a £5 gratuity. He was discharged on 8 May 1909 at the termination of his second period of engagement.
