H. Connor served as 5720 Private with the 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War, and was wounded at Driefontein on 10 March 1900. Invalided home, he subsequently served as 4552 Private with the 3rd Battalion, Essex Regiment in South Africa in 1902.
