Joseph White Spence was born in Masham, Yorkshire, and attested there for the York and Lancaster Regiment. He served during the Great War with the 10th (Service) Battalion on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 13 October 1917. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
