Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (John McGillicuddy Cd. Boatmn. H.M. Coast Gd.) engraved naming, small edge bruise, otherwise good very fine £100-120

John McGillicuddy was born in Sneem, County Kerry, on 25 May 1840, and joined the Royal Navy on 1 May 1860. He served aboard H.M.S. Constance between March 1865 and December 1868, during which period she lent men to the gunboats or hired steamers employed during the Fenian Raid of 1866. McGillicuddy, however, does not appear to have been among these men. He joined the Coast Guard as a Boatman on 19 February 1869, and was advanced to Commissioned Boatman from 27 December 1871. He appears to have served until March 1875 and received his L.S. & G.C. medal on 15 May 1875. Sold with copied record of service.
