Vernon Hodson was born in London, England on 16 September 1884, and was educated at Public School and Cambridge University. He served in France with the Royal Canadian Regiment from 1 November 1915. He was wounded on the Somme, 8 October 1916, by a gun shot to the head which fractured his skull. Invalided to England, he subsequently served as a Cadet Company Commander, Canadian Training School, until seconded for duty with the War Office (R.A.F. Instructional). His British War and Victory Medals were originally issued by the Air Ministry but a replacement trio was issued to his son in June 1966.

Promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel and to command the Royal Canadian Regiment in November 1939, Hodson landed with the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade in France in 1940, and successfully evacuated his regiment back to the U.K. after the fall of France. He returned to Canada where he was promoted to Brigadier in command of 12th Infantry Brigade Headquarters, and afterwards in temporary command of the 4th Canadian Division and 2nd Army Tank Brigade. He was finally in command of Training, Pacific Command, until his retirement on 4 April 1944. Brigadier Hodson died suddenly on 26 July 1945.
