Edward Noel Farnham Loyd was born at Gamels Hall, Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire, in 1881. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. Prior to the Great War he was employed as a Barrister, Inner Temple. Loyd enlisted in the Reserve Cavalry Regiment at York, in September 1914. He advanced to Corporal, and was released to a commission with the 2/1 Warwickshire Yeomanry, 14 February 1915. Loyd advanced to Temporary Captain in February 1916, and was discharged in April 1919.
