Frank Nicholas was born in October 1906, and enlisted in the Royal Air Force in July 1931. He served as an Armament Fitter during the Second War, and was awarded his L.S. & G.C. in July 1947. After the war Nicholas advanced to Warrant Officer, and received a Commendation for outstanding work, during Air Commodore F. G. S. Mitchell’s annual inspection of No. 58 Maintenance Unit. The Commendation was as follows:
‘Warrant Officer Nicholas served with this Unit since July 1950, during which period he has been responsible for Aircraft Armament Salvage and Unit Armament training. Warrant Officer Nicholas is extremely conscientious in the execution of his duty and by his zeal and energy he has maintained a high standard in Unit training, especially in Range work with the Ground Training Teams. By his efforts and voluntary instruction out of normal working hours W.O. Nicholas produced a first class Unit Shooting Team. W.O. Nicholas in his general activities on the unit has done much to create a good spirit on the unit, and with the above in view it is desired that he be commended by the Air Officer Commanding No. 43 Group on his annual Inspection of the unit in July 1953.’
Nicholas was subsequently posted to No. 281 Maintenance Unit, Thetford, and was discharged, 27 July 1955, after 24 years service.
