Walter George Varndell was born in Bridport, Dorset, in May 1876. He joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class in May 1894, and served with H.M.S. St. George, October 1894 - February 1898. Varndell advanced to Able Seaman and was ‘discharged dead’ from St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, 10 September 1903. At the time of his death, Varndell had been serving with H.M.S. Katoomba.
