Samuel Johnston was born in Bridgetown, Barbados, and attested for the West India Regiment on the island of his birth in August 1888. He served with the Regiment on West Africa, December 1891 - January 1895. Johnston was discharged, 16 May 1895, having served 6 years and 276 days with the Colours.
