Joseph Nelson was born in Half Way Tree, Kingston, Jamaica, and attested for the West India Regiment on the island of his birth in February 1892. He served with the Regiment in West Africa, December 1894 - October 1898 (entitled to Ashanti Star). Nelson was discharged ‘medically unfit’, 28 October 1899, having served 7 years and 247 days with the Colours.
