Robert Friers was born at Monaghan, Co. Monaghan and enlisted in the Irish Guards at Belfast in April 1901, aged 21 years. Posted to the 1st Battalion, with whom he obtained a Mounted Infantry certificate in August 1902, he remained employed in the U.K. until going with the Battalion to France in mid-August 1914. Here he remained on active service for the remainder of the War, at one time holding the rank of Acting Lance-Corporal, finally returning to the U.K. in March 1919. Awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in the latter year, Friers went on to serve with the 1st Battalion in Constantinople and Gibraltar before being discharged in April 1925.
