James Samuel Young was born at Aghaden, Co. Down in November 1894 and enlisted in the Guards Machine Gun Regiment in March 1916. Sent to France with the 4th Battalion, G.M.G.R. in August 1917, he remained there on active service until the end of the War, returning to the U.K. in March 1919 as an Acting Sergeant. Transferring to the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards in the same month, he remained a regular soldier until being discharged in June 1934, by which time he had attained the rank of Regimental Quarter-Master Sergeant; sold with two copy photographs.
