China 1842 (John Maddock, 49th Regiment Foot) suspension neatly refixed, contact marks and edge bruising, about very fine £180-220
John Maddock (or Maddocks) appears to have joined the 49th Regiment from the 11th Light Dragoons in late 1830. Then, following lengthy service out in India, he participated in the operations of the First China War, serving in Hong Kong from April to June 1841, aboard the Marion, off Rugged Island, between April and June 1842, and off Nankin or at Singapore for the remainder of the latter year. Muster rolls would further indicate that the unfortunate Maddock died at sea on 17 January 1843, while embarked with the 49th’s H.Q. Staff aboard the William Money, bound from Singapore to Calcutta.
