Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Delhi (John Crawford, 6th Dragoon Gds.) slightly bent suspension post, contact marks and edge nicks, otherwise very fine £180-220

John Crawford was born in the Parish of Stoke, Devonshire and originally enlisted in the 15th Hussars at Maidstone, Kent in July 1850, aged 19 years. Transferring to the 6th Dragoons in July 1855, following a stint of confinement for leaving his post while with the 15th Hussars, Crawford served for nearly a year out in the Crimea and Turkey and was awarded the Medal with clasp for ‘Sebastopol’. Next actively engaged in the Indian Mutiny, he was present at the outbreak in Meerut in May 1857, and afterwards in the engagements at Hindun, Aliport, Kickrowlie, Bareilly and Rohilcund, and the operations before Delhi. Returning to the U.K. shortly after the Mutiny, he went to complete another 15 years with the Colours but was four times tried and imprisoned for absence or other misdemeanours. Crawford was finally discharged at Hounslow in January 1874.
