George Arden was born in the Parish of Westmoor, near Petersfield, Hampshire and enlisted in the 23rd Royal Welch Fusiliers at Winchester in May 1855. Although quickly employed out in the Crimea and Turkey for four months, he did not win entitlement to the Medal, but made up for this medallic shortfall by his verified services at the Relief of Lucknow and in the subsequent operations of March 1858. Arden went on to complete 21 years with the Colours and was discharged in September 1876.
