Army L.S.G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (No. 1153 Pvt. Joseph Chamberlain, 54. Regt.) good very fine £150-200
Joseph Chamberlain was born in the Parish of Hoveton St John, Norwich, and attested for the 54th Regiment at Norwich on 20 September 1839, aged 21 years 1 month. He accompanied his regiment on board the ill-fated Sarah Sands, which left Portsmouth in August 1857, bound for India, and was wrecked between Cape Town and Mauritius in November 1857. Chamberlain, however, did not serve during the Indian Mutiny and his L.S. & G.C. medal is his sole entitlement. He was discharged at Colchester on 30 October 1860, ‘free with Pension after 21 years service.’ Sold with copy service papers and further research on the Sarah Sands incident.
