William Andrew Bosworthwick was born at Widley, Cosham, Hampshire and enlisted into the Rifle Brigade in 1879, aged 18 years. He attained the rank of Colour Sergeant in 1886. His overseas sevice included periods in Gibraltar, Egypt, South Africa and India but on his discharge in 1898 his only medal was that for L.S.& G.C. On 9.9.1914, with the outbreak of the Great War, Bosworthick, then aged 52 years, re-enlisted in the Rifle Brigade. Although his enlistment form shows, ‘Service in the U.K. only’ he went on to serve with the B.E.F. in France, from 21.7.1915 to 17.10.1915. On re-enlistment he was restored to his old rank of Colour Sergeant but in October 1915 he was promoted to Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant. In December 1917 he was attached to the Royal Flying Corps and in April 1918 he was transferred to Class G Reserve of the Royal Air Force with the rank of Flight Sergeant, Acting Sergeant-Major. Bosworthick died at Southampton in 1939. Sold with copied service papers.
